This is a very special lot from an organisation called al-Mashtal al-Burhani (Mashtal literally meaning nursery). Al-Mashtal al-Burhani falls under The Social Upliftment Department of The Dawoodi Bohra community. The spiritual leader of the community late Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, for many years, had urged his followers in Yemen to uproot Qaat trees and grow coffee and other fruits. He even encouraged groups of community members from all over the world to travel to Yemen between 2009-2012 to help uproot Qaat trees. Today, his son and successor Dr. Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin has continued his late father’s efforts in urging and assisting the community in Yemen to grow coffee. These efforts are overseen and executed via al-Mashtal al-Burhani, where small farmers who have recently started growing coffee can sell their coffee for a fair price to people they personally know and trust. al-Mashtal al-Burhani is involved in supporting farmers in the following ways:
They have established a school by the name of al-Madrasa tul-Bunn (The school of coffee), where farmers are educated on better farming practices.
They grow coffee saplings with great care and observation. These saplings are then sold to farmers wanting to start growing coffee. This helps speed up the process for farmers, and ensures that they are growing high quality coffee. Saplings are also provided free for farmers who cannot afford to pay for them.
By providing and/or assisting with free water supply during dry months.
They have also established a lab where coffees coming from each farm are assessed and feedback is given to the farmers on how to improve their crop
Most importantly al-Mashtal al-Burhani is a non-profit organisation, any and all profits from coffee sales go back to the farmers.
As members of The Dawoodi Bohra community ourselves, we have a very close and direct relationship with al-Mashtal al-Burhani and the people working there. You can read further about our community here: https://www.thedawoodibohras.com/
